BAMBOO CRAFTSMAN
Team Project March -August 2020The China Umbrella Museum, located in Hangzhou, is the first professional museum in China dedicated to umbrella culture, showcasing its history, art, trivia, and craftsmanship.
This project aims to design an interactive installation in the museum’s second hall to more effectively convey the traditional craftsmanship of oil-paper umbrellas.
Engaging Interaction – Use a game-like format to guide visitors through the experience
Authentic Materials – Incorporate bamboo for a tactile and immersive feel
Hands-on & Rewarding – Enable direct participation with a reward system for motivation
Learn the craftsmanship of oil-paper umbrellas through physical interactive devices that provide feedback by mimicking the movements and gestures of artisans, creating a hands on, immersive experience

This video showcases our field research and user study, which was conducted over a week to refine our final concept. We developed an interactive installation using Arduino to bridge software and physical interaction. Through a game-based approach, the installation helps visitors better understand the craftsmanship behind traditional bamboo umbrellas and appreciate the artisans’ dedication and skills.
